Trainee teachers from the English and Drama PGCE courses at Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) made a trip to London to see Othello at the Globe Theatre.

The purpose of the trip was to pass on enthusiasm about Shakespeare, live theatre, and also to inspire them to organise theatre visits when they become fully qualified teachers.

In addition the trip also provided a great opportunity for the new trainees to get to know each other and share ideas while they travelled down to London. Dr Clare Lawrence, Senior Lecturer on the PGCE Programme at BGU, explained the positive impact theatre trips offer to trainee teachers:

“Each theatre performance is unique. For some this was their first visit to the Globe – although others had been many times – and for all it was a magical experience at a vibrant and exciting performance. We stood in the Yard, had the actors moving in amongst us, enjoyed the unexpected humour of the play and experienced the tragedy.

“Our trip coincided with the International Day of Peace and it was moving that, at the end of the performance, we observed a minute’s silence within our micro ‘Globe’ to mark this occasion and all it stands for.

“The whole experience was enjoyable and inspiring: I think they all now plan to organise school trips there when they are teachers. In the meantime, many of us are hoping to go back in December to see Macbeth by candlelight”

If you’re considering a future in education then BGU is the place for you with over 150 years’ experience in teacher training. You can find more information on how to begin your new adventure on our website or by talking to our Enquiries Team.
