Steve McNichol

Steve joined Bishop Grosseteste University in 2015 after eleven years teaching in primary schools in Nottinghamshire. During his teaching career Steve taught throughout the primary age range and developed specialisms in behaviour management and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Having completed the National Programme for Specialist Leaders of Behaviour, Steve has undertaken the role of specialist behaviour teacher and has also led provision for pupils with SEND as a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO). Steve has experience of school leadership having held the role of deputy head teacher from 2010 to 2015 and has completed the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH). Teaching Steve leads the development of behaviour management skills for students on undergraduate and postgraduate routes into teaching. He also leads the provision for enhancing the knowledge and understanding of students to teach pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. In addition to teaching on courses leading to Qualified Teacher Status, Steve also leads the National Award for Special Educational Needs Co-ordination (NA-SENCO), supporting current and future Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators to achieve this nationally recognised masters-level qualification.

Steve’s prior research focussed on the behaviour management of pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in mainstream primary schools, exploring the effectiveness of different behaviour systems and their impact on pupils diagnosed with ASD. Steve is currently undertaking the Professional Doctorate of Education (EdD) with a focus on the role and working practices of school mid-day supervisors. He is also involved in research about how trainee teachers can develop effective behaviour management skills.
