The new Certificate in Education, Training and Skills (Cert. ETS) and Professional Graduate Diploma in Education, Training and Skills (pGD ETS) are recognised as teaching qualifications for the sector. There are three tailored routes, within each programme which will enable trainees to specialise either in a particular subject/vocational area, English or Mathematics.

The courses combine teaching practice and academic learning, with personal and professional development. Teaching practice will be undertaken within an arranged placement. While studying, trainees will be allocated a work-based mentor, who will typically be a professional practitioner with expertise in the chosen subject or a closely allied area.

The Cert. ETS enables non-graduate trainees, for example, highly experienced practitioners in a vocational area, to train to teach without having to undertake a degree. The pGD ETS provides an equally robust entry route into teaching for graduates who are suitably qualified in their chosen subject area.

Successful trainees on either route will be eligible to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status once they obtain employment within the sector. This is equivalent to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Holders of QTLS may therefore apply for jobs in schools, as well as the further education, training and skills sector.

The Cert. ETS and the pGD ETS provide a strong foundation for wider employment opportunities in adult learning, for example, private or voluntary sector training providers, offender education or contractual employment.

These qualifications require a year of full time study, with trainees spending one to two days a week in BGU and three to four days a week in a work based placement. These placements might include:

  • Further Education (FE) College
  • Sixth Form College
  • Academy offering provision to learners who are aged 14+
  • Private training provider
  • Employer offering formal training

Course assessment is carried out through observation of teaching activities and a range of academic assignments; there are no formal examinations.

The Cert. ETS and pGD ETS are suitable for recent graduates, industry specialists who wish to become vocational trainers, or anyone else who is interested in making a career change, into teaching.
