This PGCE course prepares you to teach Design & Technology in the 11-16 age ranges with opportunities to gain experience of teaching post-16. It is an integrated academic and professional preparation for teaching, combining study at either postgraduate or professional level with practical training to meet the Teachers’ Standards.

For all PGCE Secondary specialisms you will normally need:
– GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent) in English Language and Mathematics at the time of application. Please see our list of accepted equivalents.
– a relevant honours degree at a 2:2 classification or above; please see below for the degree subject requirements for individual specialisms. (Where the degree result is to be awarded in the year of application, we will require a predicted degree classification as part of an academic reference provided on the application)

When shortlisting for interview, we will consider the following aspects of your qualifications:
– GCSE grades (or equivalents) and relevance of subjects
– A Level grades (or equivalents) and relevance of subjects
– Degree Class and relevance of content
– Additional relevant qualifications
For studying Design & Technology – Modules in or closely related to the subject being applied for will need to form at least 50% of the degree content.
Experience in a relevant setting is important as it will help you to make sure that you are aware of the role of a teacher in the twenty-first century. The course is intensive and demanding and you need to be very sure that you understand and are suited to a career in the teaching profession. It is also important to obtain as we look for evidence of recent experience on your application form, and you will also need to talk about your recent experience in a relevant setting at interview, reflecting on what you have learned.
When shortlisting for interview, we will consider the following aspects of your experience:
– Days in school observing practice, recency and breadth
– Days of teaching
– Other relevant work experience
As a general rule, 5 days or more in a relevant setting would be a good starting point for you to get an interview for the Secondary PGCE. School-based references are required as part of the application process, however, please be aware that we are not able to accept references from relations working in the same setting.
All trainee teachers are required to pass skills tests in numeracy and literacy before they can start their course and this will be a condition of your offer. The numeracy and literacy skills tests do not replace the GCSE grade C equivalence entry requirement and are taken online at any of approximately 150 test centres throughout the UK. Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) – formerly the CRB and Health
In addition you will be required to obtain a satisfactory Declaration of Health Form, or if required, a medical examination. In addition, all students will need to pay £57.20 for an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) (formerly the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)). A successful Enhanced Disclosure is required before commencing the course.

About The Course
The BGU Secondary Design & Technology PGCE will equip you to become an outstanding secondary school teacher. You will be encouraged to engage creatively and critically with a wide range of practices, debates, and current issues. The BGU ITE partnership is a close working relationship between schools, colleges, and the university. Your school-based D&T mentor will provide ongoing developmental feedback and help you to practically apply your thinking and learning about Design & Technology pedagogy.
You will consider the broader aspects of teaching, contexts for learning, the latest government initiatives and contemporary issues in teaching, learning and assessment. You will also work alongside trainee teachers of other subjects to consider cross-curricular aspects of education. These topics will introduce you to your career in the teaching profession.
Throughout your year of study, you will explore all aspects of your subject. This includes those areas that are your strengths, as well as areas you may need to improve upon. You will study how pupils learn in your subject area, how you need to assess them and how to keep abreast of new developments within your subject. You will learn how to plan and deliver topics in ways that include all types of learners in meaningful ways.
You will spend two thirds of the year in partner schools and other educational settings gaining rich and varied experiences designed to support meeting the standards for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Working with peers, tutors and school-based colleagues, you will develop your abilities to promote effective learning among 11-16 year olds. You will also have opportunities to gain experience of the key stages before and after the ones in which you will qualify.
This course is demanding and stimulating. We aim for you to be prepared to take responsibility for your own learning, be open to creative and innovative ideas, and be competent, reflective practitioners both in your training year and beyond. Success on the course means you will have completed a postgraduate (with 60 credits at Masters level) or professional graduate qualification, have met all the Qualified Teacher Status Standards and be ready to start the next year as a Newly Qualified Teacher.
During a recent Ofsted inspection in 2015, it was noted that key strengths of the course are:

– our “involvement in current educational research”
– our warm and caring ethos which “provides trainees with very high quality levels of pastoral care and support”
This is a very practical course where you’ll spend at least two-thirds of your time in schools, mostly working with teachers and pupils, and around one third spent on your own study with training sessions in the university or locally to your school.
Assessment is through written assignments, school and University-based tasks and observations of your teaching in your school environments. This course is all about taking the theory and putting it into practice.
Careers & Further Study
Graduates of this course will generally go to posts in teaching or in other educational settings. Many continue to work in our partner schools and often eventually become mentors to our trainee teachers. BGU can help with your continued professional development (CPD) through the Master’s programme and other CPD support.
