Bishop Grosseteste University (BGU) is hosting a free ‘Girls in Mathematics’ day to encourage girls to think about studying mathematics at university on 27 March .

The day, run in collaboration with the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP), will be open to girls in Year 12 from all state schools and colleges across Lincolnshire and is aimed at widening participation in undergraduate STEM courses.

The Girls in Mathematics day will involve a mix of interactive sessions, covering social networks, six degrees of separation, computer programming and problems from Underground Mathematics, all offering opportunities for students to work together on mathematics problems and hear from STEM graduates working in a range of fields.

In addition to the workshops there will be a panel discussion reflecting on the variety of careers open to mathematics graduates. A separate session for teachers attending with students will look at the work of the AMSP, publicise further mathematical opportunities for students, and provide information about undergraduate admissions tests for mathematics.

To support the event BGU has been awarded a grant by the Women in Mathematics committee of the London Mathematical Society. Elizabeth Kimber, Programme Leader for Mathematics at BGU, described her excitement at being able to offer the event to local pupils:

“I’ve run sessions at similar outreach days at Oxford and Cambridge so I’m very pleased that we’ve been able to attract funds to run a day here in Lincolnshire.

“Studying mathematics at university can be very rewarding in its own right as well as offering lots of career opportunities, so we want to encourage students to think about continuing to study mathematics.

This event will include opportunities for students to work together on mathematics problems and hear directly from female mathematics graduates working in a range of fields.”

Around 100 spaces are available at the event but preregistration is essential. If you’d like to take part in the day, or you’re teacher who be interested in bringing a group of students along to the event, visit the AMSP website for more information on the sign up process.
