Please click on the links below for more information about what happens next. Please note the below information is applicable for applications received for the academic year 2020/21.

Unconditional Offers

Congratulations on receiving an unconditional offer with BGU! Unconditional offers are awarded based on the qualifications listed on your application, but for some courses we may still require verification of your qualifications before you can enrol onto the programme.

This verification can be necessary to meet the requirements of external representative bodies which accredit some of our courses. Depending on the content of the course, there may be other requirements that you will be asked to meet as part of your unconditional offer. For example, we will require students to complete a DBS check if they are enrolling onto a course which includes a compulsory placement.

Proof of Change of Name

If any documents you present to the Admissions Team show a different name to the one shown on your official identification, we will need to see evidence of your change of name. Examples of the documents we are able to accept for this condition are as follows:

  • Marriage certificates
  • Change of name deeds
  • A letter confirming the change of name from a professional e.g. Solicitor or doctor
  • Children’s birth certificates (if previous and current names are shown)
  • DBS certificates (if previous and current names are shown)

However, if you have none of the above and/or you have another document you think shows this evidence, please contact the Admissions Team and we can let you know if this would be acceptable.

If you have an unconditional offer, please look out for information from the Admissions Team outlining any requirements you will need to meet before enrolment.

Undergraduate courses (excluding QTS programmes)

Congratulations on choosing BGU as your firm choice University, we are very much looking forward to welcoming you to BGU and for you to start studying with us in September!

Now that you have made us your firm choice, there are a few things that we need you to complete in order to meet the conditions of your offer with us.

Enhanced DBS Check (formally CRB)

As you will be in placement at points throughout your course, you are required to obtain an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. To complete this check, we use an external provider, GBG Online Disclosures. You will be required to complete an online form, and take your chosen documents to a Post Office to be verified (a list of selected Post Offices are available via GBG’s website). The cost of this check is £53.20. Where DBS checks are returned as ‘clear’ we do not need to see a copy of your physical DBS certificate as we can access this information online.

The following courses require a DBS check as part of your offer:

  • Education Studies
  • Early Childhood Studies
  • Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion
  • Health and Social Care

You will need to complete a DBS check if any of your joint degree subjects are listed above (for example, Education Studies and English).

You will receive an email from the Admissions Team in Spring 2020 containing information on how to complete your DBS check through GBG Online Disclosures. This email will also contain a PIN and Secret Word that you will need to register on the GBG website. Please be mindful that we can only accept DBS checks completed through GBG Online Disclosures and we will not accept a check from another provider.

If you already have an enhanced DBS check and are part of the update service (you will pay a £13 subscription fee for this), we can potentially use this DBS to meet the course requirements. If you believe that you are part of the update service, please click here to download the ‘DBS Update Authorisation Form’. Once completed, please return this to the Admissions Team either via email or post and we can check that your current DBS meets our course requirements.

If your permanent address is not in the UK or if you have lived outside of the UK for a year or more within the last 5 years, you will also be required to provide a Certificate of Good Conduct or Police Report from the relevant country.

If your course is not listed above, you are not required to complete a DBS check. We will however need to see a form of official photographic ID before you come to enrol (passport or driving licence). This can be scanned and sent to us via email at admissions@bishopg.ac.uk

Pre-Enrolment Online Form

A few months before you are due to enrol, you will receive an email containing a link to a Pre-Enrolment Online Form. PGCE School Direct: If you are a PGCE School Direct student and have a current DBS through your school, please click here to download the ‘School Direct DBS Form’ and once completed, please return this to Admissions.

Health and Physical Capacity to Teach Assessment

For teacher training courses the Department for Education requires all applicants to complete a ‘Health and Physical Capacity to Teach’ assessment so that we can send you into school on placement. In order to assess this, we will send you a ‘Health and Physical Capacity to Teach’ questionnaire in Spring 2020. Once completed, the results will be sent to Lincoln County Hospital for processing. If you are considered ‘fit to teach’ then you will not hear from us, and we will update your student record accordingly. If more information is required as part of this process, you will be contacted directly by the hospital to discuss this.

Teacher Training Myths

There are often many myths surrounding Teacher Training courses, and to clear things up for you, BGU have compiled our most common myths into one place!

“I no longer have to complete the professional skills tests” TRUE – In July 2019, the Department of Education announced that the skills test would no longer be a requirement for trainees starting ITT courses. Instead, providers will make the own judgement to assess candidates literacy and numeracy skills.

“I have a grade D in my GCSE Maths, my offer says I need a grade C but because Admissions have not said anything to me, I am guessing everything is ok and I can enrol” – FALSE If you have successfully received a conditional offer to study a course leading to QTS, the conditions of this offer will be stated via UCAS/UTT track. All offers for QTS courses state that GCSEs in English Language and Maths are required to be at a grade C/grade 4 or above (this also includes Science for Primary level). The Admissions Team will not inform you that you have not met this requirement prior to enrolment as we stress at interview that it is your responsibility to meet your conditions before you enrol. If you are worried about your grades or if your qualifications meet the GCSE requirements, please contact us or speak to us on your interview day at the ‘What’s next?’ talk.

“BGU will find my placement schools for me” – TRUE BGU differs from other Universities as our Placement Services Team will find your placements for you whilst you are on the course so that you don’t have to!

“I was told that I can do a DBS via the government website as it’s cheaper” – FALSEIf a DBS check is cheaper than £53.20 then this is for a reason. DBS checks that are cheaper to obtain are usually a basic check and not an enhanced one. For all teacher training courses, you are required to hold an ENHANCED DBS check. Admissions will send out information on how to complete a DBS check via our external provider closer to enrolment. You must use our external provider to complete your DBS check as this will provide you with the correct DBS for your course and we can also check the status of your DBS online.

“I have a DBS check already, and I am going to use that to meet the DBS condition of my offer” – BOTH TRUE AND FALSE You can only use a DBS check that you already have if it is enhanced, for the appropriate workforce, and is part of the update service. To be part of the update service you will pay an annual subscription fee of £13. This allows your DBS to be transferrable between organisations. You can only sign up for the update service within 30 days of obtaining your DBS certificate. If you are not a part of the update service then you will need to complete a new DBS check via our external provider. If you have a DBS check through an organisation or school it is unlikely that they will have paid for your DBS to be part of the update service.
