Senior Lecturer in Primary ITT
Merelina Houghton is a core tutor on the Primary PGCE programme and is also involved in working on the Undergraduate routes into teaching. She is also the BGU lead for a local School Direct cluster. Merelina first joined Bishop Grosseteste University in 2010, as a Visiting Tutor, teaching on the Foundation Degree for Learning Practitioners, also doing placement supervision on the BA in Early Childhood Studies (both in the former School of Culture, Education and Innovation) and working as a placement link tutor on the Primary PGCE. She joined the permanent Primary PGCE team in 2011. Prior to joining BGU, Merelina taught in a range of primary schools, specialising in leading Literacy and Religious Education. She has also worked abroad, teaching English as a foreign language.
Merelina teaches on the Primary PGCE across a range of professional issues and in her areas of specialism (English and Religious Education). She also teaches on the BA in Primary Education and BA in Primary Teaching Studies, supporting in some of her specialist areas. Her key module responsibilities are as one of the subject specialist tutors for English (including Phonics) on the Learning and Teaching module.
Merelina’s MEd (Literacy) research involved looking at Children’s tastes in Reading. Merelina is currently engaged in ‘An analysis of the impact of BGU Partnership training on Primary PGCE trainees’ confidence in teaching Religious Education.’ The aims of this research are: To gain a deeper understanding of trainees’ confidence and concerns regarding their role as teachers of RE in primary school and to develop an understanding of how we may best prepare trainees (in the context of a one year course) for teaching this subject.
