The BGU Foundation Fund was set up by the Alumni of BGU to support projects that enhance the student experience and help make a difference to other peoples’ lives. The money for the fund comes from philanthropic donations from individuals, trusts, companies and general fundraising.
The fund supports a range of projects that clearly demonstrate enrichment during your time at the University. It focuses on projects that cannot be resourced through the University’s main funds. A number of small grants are available to assist with voluntary work or other innovative, creative, charitable or community based projects both here in the UK or overseas.
The Foundation Fund is restricted to BGU students, Alumni and staff, so is the best way to guarantee a pool of money to support each other to achieve their goals, whether this be to enable a gifted child from a low income family to attend university or to enable students to volunteer to help those less fortunate in the developing world; your donation can make a real difference.
Past Successful Projects
The Book Bus
Andy Wright, an alumnus, spent a month volunteering with The Book Bus, supporting and encouraging children’s reading and bringing a love of books to children in remote villages in Malawi, Africa. The Book Bus is based in the south of the country and supports around 22 schools, most of which have no books at all and no experience of using books as a teaching resource.
In 2014, the Foundation Fund enabled 43 BGU students to visit the Harghita County of Romania and work with underprivileged children living in care homes and orphanages in the County. Eight students also volunteered in schools in Tirunelveli, India, leading classroom sessions and becoming active practitioners in this new environment.
Around the University
Grants have also been given for specific projects within BGU for equipment that would have been otherwise unachievable within normal financial constraints such as the Grand Piano in the University Chapel and the University Mace and Staves used in the Graduation service.
BGU have a number of areas they wish to focus on directing funding for 2017 / 18 including:
- Financial assistance to BGU clubs and societies through a match funding scheme
- Start-up funding to assist innovative and creative concepts to become real projects.
- Providing support to volunteers at UK based and overseas projects.
What you could receive
Grants of between £150 and £500 are awarded depending on the quality of your application submitted and the evidence you provide.

The Grant Awarding Panel meets three times a year to go through all applications and take into consideration the project, the quality of the application and the supporting evidence before making decisions. You can submit your application at any time but please make a note of the Panel Meetings below.
