Moving away from home to begin your studies can be daunting, but we aim to make your transition from home to BGU as smooth as possible. We are looking forward to welcoming you on Saturday 17th September 2016 from 10.00am – 2.00pm in The Hardy Building, prior to your move into Halls. You’ll find The Hardy Building near the main car park (Hardy Zone) on the campus map on Blackboard.
If you are moving into halls parking is available on campus for unpacking. The car park is located behind the Sport and Fitness Centre, off Longdales Road and is close to the Halls of Residence. Our current students will be here to direct you and help you with your belongings.
Items you will need during your stay in the Halls of Residence
All students are asked to provide their own bedding and linen. You are responsible for the insurance of all personal effects which you bring to the University. Before purchasing a policy, we advise students to check their parents’ existing home insurance as this may provide cover.
Contact details of various insurance companies are available on request from the Accommodation Officer, if required. If you use a TV in your room, you will require a valid TV License. The TV License Surveillance team visits the University every year. You will also need a TV aerial for your room if you are living in Constance Stewart Hall.
In the interest of health and safety, the use of cookers, refrigerators, irons, toasters/ sandwich makers and supplementary heaters are not permitted in your study bedroom. However, you are allowed to use any of your own appliances from the following list:
- DVD player
- Mobile phone charger
- iPod/MP3 charger
If you intend to use any items from the above list in the University, they will need to be tested. It is a legal requirement that all portable, electrical appliances are checked for safety on an annual basis. This extends to the personal equipment owned by resident students.
All electrical equipment, unless brand new and accompanied by a receipt must be tested and the University will organise this on your behalf and the cost is included as part of your accommodation fees. Such items will be checked at the start of term. Details of testing will be given to you during the first week in University.
The total amount due for 2016/17 academic year is £3,320.00 for Constance Stewart Hall (shared facilities) and £4,232.00 for Wickham Hall (En-suite) payable in 3 instalments over the course of the academic year (October, January & April).
Didn’t get into Halls?
Where applications are received by the 17 June 2016, and a room is not offered in halls, we will guarantee to find alternative accommodation off campus. Further advice will be given by the Accommodation Officer. Applications received after 17 June 2016 and those interviewed after this date, will receive house hunting advice from the Accommodation Officer. We are unable to offer on-campus accommodation to PGCE/School Direct trainees, however, if you would like any advice or guidance regarding housing, please feel free to contact Rachel Crane, our Accommodation Officer on firstname.lastname@example.org or 01522 583707.
There is the opportunity to join our local Medical Practice, Minster Practice whilst you are living at BGU. However, it is not necessary if you live in the local area. If you join the practice and go home during the holidays, it is possible to re-join your old doctors as a temporary resident for your time at home. Further information will be given to you during your Welcome Week.
Living Off Campus
Undergraduate students allocated accommodation in Crosstrend House will be able to take residency from Saturday 17th September. Keys will be available for collection from campus between 10.00 am – 2.00 pm. Instructions and further information on your arrival will be sent from the Bishop Grosseteste University’s Accommodation Office at the beginning of September 2016.
Students living in private housing will be notified by their landlord of the pending moving in date.
