An essential attribute in the 21st century, information literacy is applicable to everyday life in a variety of ways, from planning journeys to finding insurance quotes to preparing for job interviews. In the world of work, information literate employees are valued for their organisational, planning and problem solving skills. The Information Literacy attribute is split into three strands:
Understanding why and when information is needed, how to recognise different information media and formats, and appreciating the many ways information can be accessed and presented. When undertaking projects and assignments, these skills help students to formulate successful search strategies and gather meaningful research.
Understanding how to identify, access and assess a wide range of information sources. When undertaking projects and assignments, these skills help students to locate information and review it for relevance, quality, bias, credibility and currency.
Understanding why citation and referencing is important in maintaining academic integrity and appreciating the different ways information can be communicated. When undertaking projects and assignments, these skills help students to observe professional standards of formatting and presentation, and adhere to legal and contractual framework such as copyright law.
