Fairtrade Fortnight 2010 - Fashion, Food and Fairtrade!

A big thank you to everyone who took part in our Fairtrade challenge day yesterday. It was a hugely successful day and we sold over 700 Fairtrade items in one day, which is a massive achievement. We've just drawn the raffle tickets and the winners are as follows:

• 1st prize (£100 Ethical Superstore voucher) - ticket number 0953
• 2nd prize (food and wine hamper from Spicers of Hythe) - ticket number 0857
• 3rd prize (Divine chocolate basket) - ticket number 0442
• 4th prize (Fairtrade beer basket) - ticket number 0577

If you're one of the lucky winners, you can arrange to collect your prize by contacting the BG Marketing Team by emailing ben.rook@bishopg.ac.uk. (any prizes not collected by Friday 13 March will be re-drawn).

Again, many thanks for your support for this event.

Our Fairtrade Background

In January 2008, BG was successfully awarded Fairtrade status by the Fairtrade Foundation, one of a small number of universities and colleges in the UK to achieve the necessary criteria:

  • To make Fairtrade foods available for sale in all campus shops and ensure Fairtrade foods are used in all cafés, restaurants and bars on campus. Where this is not possible, ensure that there is a commitment to begin to use Fairtrade foods in these establishments as soon as it becomes possible to do so
  • To serve Fairtrade products (for example, coffee and tea) at all meetings hosted by the University College and the SU, and in all University College and SU management offices
  • Commit to campaigning for increased Fairtrade consumption on campus

Products bearing the Fairtrade mark can be found all over the Bishop Grosseteste campus, guaranteeing that the farmers who have produced them receive a fair and stable price for their products, as well as ensuring a greater respect for the environment.

'We are absolutely delighted at having been awarded Fairtrade status. We take fair trade very seriously here, and a commitment to fair trade and justice is embedded in our core beliefs and values, so it is very pleasing to have this commitment recognised by the Fairtrade Foundation.' Professor Muriel Robinson - Principal, Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln
