Welcome to Drama in the Community
So, if you would like to :-
- study drama at degree level
- use drama in the wider community
- learn valuable professional skills during your degree course
Then read on .......
One of the two degrees offered in Drama - Drama in the Community is an unusual course; one of the first and one of the few in the country.
It was established in 1994 and has built up a vast network of community contacts. It deals in Applied Drama, a rapidly growing field concerned with the practical application of drama to social and community issues. Students have opportunities to work with community groups from schools to youth centres from care centres to prisons and a variety of others in between.
The course enables students to develop skills in workshop planning and management. Students are given plenty of opportunities to develop links with community groups. They learn, through observation and talking to people to consider what kind of workshop experiences or performance might be appropriate for a particular community group, and tailor work to meet those needs.
Alongside training in practical workshop delivery and devising and directing skills, students receive training in professional aspects of community and small company work, such as marketing, budgeting, contracting and fundraising. Throughout the course students have plenty of opportunity to develop communication skills which are transferable to all aspects of professional life. In all, we offer a fascinating variety of opportunities.
We are looking for versatile, perceptive people. So, if you are still interested, here are some questions for you to consider:
- Do you love drama?
- Are you good at it?
- Are you lively and interested in other people?
- Do you feel that you have something to offer?
- Are you ready for a challenge?
- In fact, are you a little out of the ordinary?
Well, so is this degree course.
This is the ideal degree for those who want to make a difference to individuals, to groups and ultimately to society by using the creative potential of a subject they love.
Might that be you?
If it might be then there are plenty of good reasons for considering us.
Whilst there are quite a number of places offering a module in Community Drama, we are one of the few places to offer it as a degree course and we do it well, because we have had plenty of practice!
For community drama to work at its best, you need a community who understands the benefits. We have been working in and around the city and county for a considerable time. We have forged strong links with schools, youth centres, community centres, care homes, prisons and many other community groups. The course is so well established and respected that we frequently find that community groups approach us asking for projects and groups of students to work with them. Every year we put at least eighteen large projects out into the community and there are innumerable smaller ones.
