Loyd Grossman To Present The Sandford Awards For Heritage Education 2010

In 2010, 37 heritage sites across the UK were awarded a prestigious Sandford Award. This award, jointly managed by Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln and the Heritage Education Trust, recognises heritage sites which have achieved excellence in heritage education through work with schools.

The sites that have won a Sandford Award this year range from museums, such as The Collection in Lincoln and the World Rugby Museum in Twickenham, to historic houses such as Burghley House and Harvington Hall. A wide range of other heritage sites are also winners, including the Stockport Air Raid Shelters, Kent Life and the Danelaw Centre for Living History.

The awards ceremony and celebration will take place on 8 February 2011 at the Houses of Parliament, which is also one of the winners of a 2010 Sandford Award. The awards will be presented by Loyd Grossman OBE, with the Speaker of the House of Commons, Mr John Bercow MP, bringing proceedings to a close.

Jean Macintyre, Head of the Department of Culture and the Environment at Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln, said "We are absolutely delighted that Loyd Grossman will be presenting the Sandford Awards this year, and at such an iconic site. The Award is growing each year with more and more sites realising the advantages of celebrating their excellent practice by achieving an award. The next few years will be an exciting time for the Sandford Awards as we plan to broaden the scope of the scheme so that more people and sites will benefit."

Loyd Grossman, Chairman of The Heritage Alliance, commented: "Increased access to, and understanding of, our heritage is essential if all sections of society are to have the opportunity to enjoy this rich and diverse national resource. The Heritage Alliance and its members work hard to promote the central role of the heritage sector in education, and the broad spectrum of excellent projects showcased by the Sandford Award winners really highlight just how active, and successful, the sector is in championing learning. I'm delighted to be presenting the recipients of this year's Sandford Awards with their well-deserved Awards."
